NEW SCHEME
M61, Junctions 4 to 5 Bolton
Work to install a new concrete barrier in the central reservation of the M61 between Junctions 4 and 5 is due to begin on Monday 20 August. A 50 mph speed limit will be in place through the roadworks, and there will be some lane closures overnight and at weekends.
ONGOING SCHEMES
M60/A34 South Manchester / Cheadle
A major project is underway between Junctions 4 and 2 of the M60 and along the A34 to reduce congestion and improve safety.
Various traffic restrictions are currently in place including daytime hard shoulder closures along the M60 anti-clockwise for 2 miles, and a 50mph speed limit through narrowed lanes, and overnight closures of slip roads, Sharston link road and M60 anti-clockwise carriageway from 9pm to 5am weekdays and 9pm to 7am at weekends.
Overnight closures will affect:
- M56 eastbound Sharston Link between Junctions 3 and 1
- M60 anticlockwise between Junctions 5 and 3
- The entry slip road from the northbound A34 onto the anti-clockwise M60 at Junction 3
- M60 Junction Junction 3 anti-clockwise exit slip road onto the southbound A34
- M60 Junction 3 clockwise exit slip which merges with the anti-clockwise exit slip before meeting the southbound A34.
Work is expected to be completed by Friday 5 October.
M55, Junctions 1 to 4, Preston to Blackpool
Overnight work to repair sections of the M55 between Preston and Blackpool is taking place between 8pm and 6am and involves lane and slip road closures. There will be a 50mph speed limit past roadworks and, where slip roads are closed, signed diversions will be in place. The project is due to be completed by Friday 24 August.
M6 Junction 27, Standish
Work is taking place between Friday 15 June and Thursday 23 August when lane three in each direction will be closed around the clock. During this phase there will be narrowed lanes and a 50mph speed limit. The hard shoulder will be used as an additional running lane to ensure three lanes of carriageway are maintained in each direction. Installation and removal of traffic management at the beginning and end of the second phase of the work will require the northbound exit and southbound access slip roads to be closed overnight. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place during these times.
A5036, Bootle
The A5036 Church Road will be closed overnight between Netherton Way and the roundabout leading onto Bridge Road until Saturday 25 August for resurfacing work. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 5am and a diversion will be in place.
WORK BEING CARRIED OUT BY OTHER AGENCIES ON THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY NETWORK
A663 Chadderton
There is a 30mph speed limit for all traffic on the A663 between Whitegate Lane and Milton Drive until the end of August, while junction construction and improvement work is carried out.
WORK OFF THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY NETWORK WHICH MAY AFFECT HIGHWAYS AGENCY CUSTOMERS
M6 Junction 31
Drivers are warned of possible delays in the Fulwood area of Preston around the M6 Junction 31a as two extra lanes are added to the motorway slip road, which takes traffic from the motorway onto Bluebell Way. Traffic signals will also be added to the roundabout. The work is being carried out by the council on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency.
Notes to Editors
1. The Highways Agency is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. We manage, maintain and improve England's motorways and trunk roads on behalf of the Secretary of State.
2. Note that some roadworks are weather-dependent and dates or times may change at short notice. See Note 4 for details of how to access real-time traffic information from the Highways Agency.
3. Changes to details of roadworks previously notified are in bold.
4. We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum. We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times. Drivers are advised to check their route for roadworks and allow extra time for their journeys where needed. We have a variety of journey planning tools that road users can use to check travel conditions on the roads we manage, and we will do all we can to keep road users informed.
5. Real-time traffic information for England's motorways and major A roads is available:
- From the web at or if using a phone or mobile device.
Before using any mobile, find a safe place to park. Never stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency. Make sure it's safe and legal before you call.
- By phone from the Highways Agency 24-hour voice activated phone service on 08700 660 115. (Calls from BT residential landlines to 0870 numbers will cost no more than 8p per minute; call charges from other landlines and mobile networks may vary).
Safety at roadworks
The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:
- Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
- Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
- Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
- Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
- Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
