Around 275 miles of works will be completed before the double bank holiday and a further 43 miles will be lifted between Friday 1 June and Wednesday 6 June, providing extra lane space for holiday traffic.
The Agency's Traffic Officers will be patrolling the network to help clear up incidents quickly - and a range of information services will be provided to allow road users to plan their journeys.
Roads Minister, Mike Penning, said:
“For the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday, the Highways Agency is completing or lifting nearly nine out of every ten sets of roadworks on motorways and trunk roads in England. This means that 99 per cent of the strategic road network will be clear of roadworks over the bank holiday period. More lanes will be open and speed restrictions will be lifted from roadworks where it is safe to do so.
"I advise holidaymakers, day trippers and anyone else planning to travel over the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday period to check weather and travel conditions before setting off. The Highways Agency offers a range of traffic information services to help road users plan their journeys, and Traffic Officers will be on patrol throughout the holiday period, to help clear up any incidents as quickly as possible.”
Roadworks at 100 locations will be completed ahead of the bank holiday. A further 17 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions will be removed by 06:00 on Friday 1 June and will not be put back before 00:01 on Wednesday 6 June. At 17 locations, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain in place for the safety of drivers and their passengers. (Details below)
Friday evening and Saturday morning are expected to be the busiest over the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday weekend, as people set out on short breaks or day trips.
With the Torch Relay currently making its way around the country, and as the summer holidays and the London 2012 Games approach, the Highways Agency is encouraging road users to plan ahead for travel whether they are going to the Games or making other journeys.
The Highways Agency provides live traffic information through its website, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile platforms, such as the iPhone. The Agency also provides live traffic information via the Twitter micro-blogging website. Our Twitter channels will help you prepare for holiday journeys, with timely reminders and traffic updates. Notes to Editors
1. The Highways Agency is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. We manage, maintain and improve England’s motorways and other strategic roads on behalf of the Secretary of State.
2. A full list of roadworks is at the foot of this release.

3. Maintenance and improvement projects: We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow road works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum. We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times. Drivers are advised to check their route for road works and allow extra time for their journeys where needed. We have a variety of journey planning tools that road users can use to check travel conditions on the roads we manage, and we will do all we can to keep road users informed.
4. Safety at roadworks: The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:
- Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
- Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
- Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
- Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
- Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
5. Real-time traffic information for England’s motorways and other strategic roads is available:
- From the web at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or www.highways.gov.uk/mobile if using a phone or mobile device.
- By phone from the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000 at any time. (Calls to 0300 numbers will cost no more than 5p per minute from a standard BT residential landline. Call charges from other landlines and mobile networks may vary, but will be no more than a standard geographic call and will be included in all inclusive minutes and discount schemes). Make sure it’s safe and legal before you call. Before using any mobile, find a safe place to park. Never stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency.
- On an iPhone app which will automatically select the region you are in. Free to download from the iTunes store or search for Highways Agency on your device.
- From Twitter – there are eight regional feeds with live traffic information and seasonal channels for main holiday routes. For the full index visit www.highways.gov.uk/twitter.

Roadworks remaining over the Jubilee bank holiday
Roadworks remain in place at 16 locations, mostly for safety reasons
(80 carriageway miles)
View on map
M1 J10-13 (near Luton) - Upgrade to "managed motorway" hard shoulder running. Junctions 11 and 12 are also being improved
Mixture of contraflow and narrow lanes with 50mph temporary speed limit: 22 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Speed limit needs to stay in place because safety equipment has had to be disabled during the roadworks. Temporary reinstatement of this safety equipment would take much longer than the holiday.
M4 J1-3 (near Heston ) - Precautions while viaduct structure is checked
Temporary 7.5 tonne weight restriction: 12.4 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Weight restriction is a safety precaution.
M4 J19-20 and M5 J15-17 (near Bristol) - Installing infrastructure such as gantries, lay-bys and systems for 'managed motorway'
50mph temporary speed limit: 8.2 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Some hard shoulder closures will be lifted, but where there is a temporary safety barrier the temporary speed limit needs to remain for safety reasons.
M5 J29 and A30 (near Exeter) - Junction improvement to provide for new development (County Council scheme)
40mph temporary speed limit: 2.45 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Some works next to the carriageway will not be fully completed. Lane closures will be lifted but the temporary speed limit needs to remain for safety reasons.
M6 J6-8 (near Birmingham) - Construction of new gantries and communication systems in preparation for 'managed motorway'
Reduced to a single narrow lane in each direction with 50mph speed limit: 6.8 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions need to stay for safety because there are open excavations and a temporary safety barrier.
M25 J9-10 (near Cobham) - Construction of new Motorway service Area, including new slip roads and underbridge.
Narrow lanes and 50mph temporary speed limit on anti-clockwise carriageway only: 1.3 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: All lanes now clear on clockwise carriageway but completion has been held up on the opposite side because of heavy rain at a critical time, this means there are open excavations so lane and speed restrictions need to stay in place for safety reasons.
M50 J1-2 (near Ledbury) - Bridge repairs
Reduced to a single narrow lane in each direction with 50mph speed limit: 1.5 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions needed to protect the scaffolding structure which is essential to the repair works.
M50 J1-2 (near Tewkesbury) - Replacement of and repairs to viaduct
Contraflow and 40mph speed limit: 3 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Contraflow has to stay in place because the eastbound viaduct is being demolished and reconstructed.
M62 J25-30 (near Leeds / Bradford) - Installing infrastructure such as gantries, lay-bys and systems for 'managed motorway'
Narrow lanes and 50mph temporary speed limit: 16 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions need to stay for safety because there are open excavations close to traffic lanes.
A1 J17 A1(M) to A47 (near Chesterton) - Defective section of safety fence
50mph temporary speed limit: 0.5 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Speed limit needed for stretch where safety fence is defective.
A31 Canford Bottom (near Ferndown) - Roundabout improvements
Narrow lanes and 30mph temporary speed limit: 1.2 miles of roadworks with moderate delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions needed for safety because there are open excavations close to traffic lanes.
A38 (near Bodmin) - Embankment stabilisation
Narrow lanes and 30mph temporary speed limit: 1.25 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Instability of road edge means traffic has had to be moved away from edge into narrow lanes.
A40 (near Ross-on-Wye) - Concrete repair to underside of bridge and installation of safety barrier
Reduced to a single narrow lane in each direction with 40mph speed limit: 0.8 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions needed to protect the scaffolding structure which is essential to the repair works.
A46 A4184 Cheltenham Road (near Evesham) - Providing access to roundabout from football club
Narrow lanes with 30mph temporary speed limit and right-turn restrictions: 0.8 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Work needs to continue in order to be complete in time for Olympic Torch Relay passing through.
A46 A428 (near Coventry) - Improvements to roundabout
Narrow lanes and 30mph temporary speed limit: 0.5 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions need to stay for safety because there are open excavations close to traffic lanes.
A46 Whisby Cross Road (near Lincoln) - Major junction improvements
40mph temporary speed limit and right-turn restriction: 2.5 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Restrictions are needed because road markings have been removed and to keep traffic safely away from open excavations.
A663 Foxdenton Lane (near Oldham) - Junction improvements for access to school
Lane closure and 30mph temporary speed limit: 0.5 miles of roadworks with nil to slight delays expected.
Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday: Although one lane closure will be lifted for the holiday, other restrictions need to remain for safety due to ongoing utilities and construction works with open excavation adjacent to the carriageway. Stopping all Oldham Council's works for the holiday could result in the school access not being completed in time for the new September term.
